Milou and Petra. Milou, Founder of Hôtel Magique. Petra, Founder of Palais. Two friends. Two entrepreneurs. Two lovers of beautiful, meaningful things. Together, they created the Portofino lampshade collection — inspired by seaside living, travel, and timeless design.

The idea behind the collection

Petra: “A combination of patterns, structures and prints you might have seen in Portofino in the 1950s: long fringes, raffia, florals, parasols — and the views. Oh, the views.”

Where it all started

Milou: “My starting point for collaborations is always the same: what would a hotel designed by Hôtel Magique in collaboration with Palais look like? Where would it be, who would stay there — and what would the lampshades look like?”

With most inspiration coming from travels and coastal destinations, Portofino felt like the natural choice. Natural sea tones, festive reds, playful fringes, watery acrylics and hand-drawn details all came together in this collection.

Petra: “Milou presented us with a few moods and we built from there. Her collages are truly unparalleled.”

A small anecdote

Petra: “We switched to a different fringe manufacturer at the very last minute. Oh, the joys of being a perfectionist.”

A remarkable detail

Petra: Every pattern and letter in the collection is hand-drawn by Milou.

Milou: “I love the hidden text details underneath the fringes of the Ava lampshade.”

Favourite pieces

Milou: “Amalfi in red. One look and I’m instantly transported back to Indian summer hotel visits by the sea.”

Petra: “The Ava in light blue, named after Ava Gardner — who spent time in Portofino. Every Ava lampshade has a little surprise hidden beneath its fringes.”
